Downtown Denton update: This week, crews will begin to remove and replace the traffic light pole at Locust and Oak Streets. Did you know that the current traffic signals downtown were actually installed back in 1979 and have been maintained and updated since then by the city? Now, with improved technology that can help improve public safety, the city will be replacing these aging infrastructure pieces.
With the new pole design, the Denton Main Street Association board is grateful that the City has gone out of their way to ensure that the new light poles made for the downtown area meet not only the City's Strict standards for safety, but that they also match the look and feel of the current poles we have now. Barring any weather delays, the pilot project at the corner of Locust and Oak is expected to be complete in Late November. The remaining signals on the Square will be replaced after the holiday shopping season.
We would like to thank the City for all of their hard work as this project will improve safety and energy efficiency with new ramps that meet the American Disability Act regulations, audible crossing signals and energy efficient LED lights. Although the signal replacement will require periodic lane closures, we are happy to say that the plans currently do not anticipate total closure of either street as part of the project and no significant impact on parking is anticipated.
