WHAT IS WASSAIL?

Wassail is a hot, spiced holiday punch traditionally made with apple cider, ale or wine, citrus, and warming spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves. It is associated with wassailing, an ancient English custom of singing and drinking to good health and a productive harvest.

ABOUT WASSAIL FEST

Tasting wassail is a fun and festive way to celebrate the winter holidays and bring our community together. You will have the opportunity to taste many varieties of wassail this evening and we invite you to recognize your favorite by casting a vote in our annual wassail competition.

Here We Go A-Wassailing!

The Denton Main Street Association has been celebrating this yuletide custom in Downtown Denton since 1999. We are excited for you to join us as we continue this annual tradition!

Taste the many versions of Wassail

Make your way around Downtown Denton, sampling wassail recipes as you go. You can rate the wassail on a variety of factors, such as taste, aroma, and appearance. There are so many different options, you're sure to find a winner!

Enjoy the shopping opportunities

Wassail stops can get pretty popular during the evening, so you might be standing in line for a few minutes. Enjoy some festive holiday shopping while you peruse downtown and sample all the tasty wassail.

Vote for your favorite Wassail

After tasting all the different versions of wassail, members of the public are invited to vote online for their favorite wassail recipe. The contestant with the most popular votes at the end of the night wins!

What is Wassail Weekend? It is just a fussy old English word for hot cider. Each year, some downtown merchants will stir up their best recipe to give free tastings for all ages during the festivities of the annual Denton Holiday Lighting Festival. This event falls on the Friday that is one week after Thanksgiving, and tastings will be served during Denton Holiday Lighting Festival by some merchants. In addition to Friday, more downtown merchants will give free tastings while you shop and dine downtown on Saturday afternoon, or until the Wassail runs out.
